My Bluestem Drift JW

“Bluestem” is a striking smoky black stallion marked with a small snip and a touch of white on his right hind. He is 91% NFQHA carrying one copy of the cream gene—which he will pass on 50% of the time. Bluestem represents a cross we were very intentional about. He is sired by our late foundation stallion, Walter O Rielly “Radar,” and out of one of our most trusted ranch mares, My Kittys Belle JW. This pairing was designed to create the kind of horses we want to ride ourselves—athletic, dependable, and built to last—and Bluestem quickly stood out as exactly that. From an early age, we believed Bluestem had the makings of a herd sire and future replacement for Radar. As a two-year-old, he was sent to training where he was started under saddle, became well broke, and went on to gain experience in ranch work. By spring of 2024, he was progressing steadily in his roping training when we lost Radar at the age of 24. At that point, Bluestem came home to step into the role we had always envisioned for him. 2025 marked Bluestem’s first foal crop, and as with all our horses, we will continue to evaluate him as a sire over the coming years. His first foal crops impressed us greatly with their structure, quality, and presence.

My Bluestem Drift JWBluestem’s dam, My Kittys Belle JW is a 2006 year model and is 91% NFQHA. She is one of our proven saddle horses and we were very excited to get foals from her after her ranching retirement! Belle was shown by our daughter in Colt to Maturity 4-H classes as a yearling to 5 year old. Belle was a very kind mare and an energetic riding horse. She was very quick, sure footed and a natural lead changer both in the arena and out in the hills. Whether you lined her out to ride the pasture or put her in a circle in the arena, she stayed where you put her until you are ready to stop and then ‘stop’ she did. She spent most of her life behind cattle here at the ranch. We have a full sister to Belle, 2009 My Kittys Melody JW, who is also in our broodmare bunch and has produced REALLY nice foals for us. She was so nice we kept 3 of her daughters who became producers for us. Belle’s mother, My Little Kitty, was owned by Barbra Kennedy Johnson and was given to Ella. Belle’s sire was our late 96% NFQHA stallion, JK Jay Reed, who was a consistent producer. Belle’s 2020 filly, Top Gun Empire JW was an excellent example of a JK Jay Reed daughter bred back to one of our Paddys Irish Whiskey sons. She had her own first foal in 2024, Phobos Topsail JW. Belle then had 3 full siblings by Radar, 2021 My Bluestem Drift JW, 2023 palomino stallion Bedrock Drift JW and 2024 buckskin filly, My Galaxy Drift JW.

My Bluestem Drift JWBluestem’s sire is Walter O Rielly aka Radar. He became a great addition to our program when we purchased him in 2012 and 2024 was his final and 12th foal crop for us. Due to some health issues, Radar was euthanized spring of 2024. We have kept back several of his fillies for breeding, but also have kept back fillies and geldings to use as our own personal saddle horses. Radar was a fantastic asset to our program. He brought older foundation lines to cross back with our Paddy's get. Radar threw BIG foals that could cover alot ground with amazing laid back dispositions. Most of his offspring have gone on to be ranch horses, with a few rope and barrel prospects too. We were looking for a foundation Driftwood bred stallion to hopefully get some replacement fillies out of some of our better mares. Radar was a 90.234% foundation bred perlino stallion and went back to King P-234 ten times, to Driftwood four times with strong doses of Joe Reed, Three Bars and a little Doc Bar. Radar was a 16 hand horse with a huge stride and a gentle personality. Bluestem has exactly the same stride and personality. Radar had excellent bone, athleticism and conformation. His lineage told us that his offspring would have cow and would be capable of performing at any level. Radar truly became a broodmare sire for us first and obviously a sire of sires with Bluestem.

Bluestem is especially meaningful to our program as our first homegrown stallion among seven. He represents not only the continuation of carefully selected bloodlines, but also the legacy of our family’s program—one we are proud to carry forward, honoring the foundation laid by Jodie’s Aunt Barb. We believe Bluestem embodies the qualities we value most: structure, disposition, ability, and purpose. As stated above his first foal crops have exceeded our expectations, and we are excited to watch them grow, perform, and represent the future of our program.
