Top Gun Viper JW

2026 Bay/Gray Stallion
Return to Previous Page

Born 5-11-26. Some years we do a fun theme for names. This year for Top Gun Whiskey we are continuing with Top Gun Call Signs from the original 1986 movie and the 2022 movie. Our other stallions will have the names of Rock Bands from the 70s, 80s and 90s. This stallion is named Viper. In the 1986 film Top Gun, the “Viper” character is Commander Mike “Viper” Metcalf, portrayed by actor Tom Skerritt CBR+1. Viper is a U.S. Navy fighter weapons school (TOPGUN) instructor and a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving alongside Maverick’s father, Duke Mitchell.

‘Viper’ is a bay/gray stallion with no white on his face. It appears he has a left rear low white pastern or possibly even just a coronet band. He also has a left front partial white coronet or even just one or two distal spots. His dam is Mia Holly Gunpowder aka Holly. Holly’s dam, Sapa Mia Reed JW, is a mare we raised out of Little Sapa and JK Jay Reed. Take a good look at the speed pedigree on Mia’s bottom side. According to Circle Dot Horses, Mia Cash Too was a gentle, AAA Stakes Placed Winner with a nice disposition who ran the 3rd fastest qualifying time in the All-American Derby and sired foals that went on the be race horses, barrel horses and arena event horses and had plenty of cow.  Little Sapa leaves Dash For Cash on Mia’s papers and also gives her Leroy Brown, Three Bars and Jet Deck through both Easy Jet and Jet Smooth.  Mia’s sire is a 96% foundation bred stallion with Poco Pine, Continental King by King P-234, Joe Reed II and Whiskey Bert all on his papers. We are currently and actively ranching on several of Holly’s maternal siblings out of Mia. Holly’s sire is PG Gunpowder, a son of Playgun who has earned $18K+ in NCHA earnings and is a World Champion sire. 6666’s website states, “PG Gunpowder proved himself quickly as a sire with WS Snicklefritz, the 2009 NCHA Limited Rider Co-World Champion. Sired by all-time leading Playgun, he is out of a proven daughter of Peppy San Badger and granddaughter of Doc O’Lena - a cross that has produced earners of more than $3,500,000.” Holly’s first foal in 2024, Top Gun Titania JW, was a very nice filly going gray that sold to a repeat buyer. Her 2025 foal, Top Gun Iceman JW was also a gray stallion that sold to a repeat buyer.

His sire, Top Gun Whiskey, is one of four Paddys Irish Whiskey sons that we own. This is his 8th foal crop. We decided to give Top Gun a shot at the show ring before breeding him. In 2016 he qualified for the AQHA World Show in Jr Reining, Jr Reining Level 2 and Jr Cowhorse Level 2; in 2017 he qualified for the AQHA World Show in Jr Cowhorse, Jr Cowhorse Level 2 and Open Heading Level 2 placing 6th.  It has been an interesting ride as he continued to show during the 2018 year as well as breed some of our mares for 2019 foals. Top Gun qualified for the 2018 World NRCHA show, was 2018 North Central Regional NRCHA Champion and has earned 47 AQHA performance points in reining, working cow horse, heading, vrh cutting, vrh confirmation, vrh reining and heeling. He also has his AQHA Open Performance ROM. Top Gun was injured during 2019 breeding season that cut his showing career short, but he still qualified for NRCHA Celebration of Champions in LTD Open Bridle. He was North Central Region NRCHA 4th place LTD Open Bridle and North Central Region NRCHA 9th place Open Bridle. Check out his stallion page for the most up to date information as we will change it as it happens.

Viper will have all the right moves and ‘cowiness’ to make an excellent performance, ranch, or rope horse. He will be a dynamo package with a good disposition.  Viper could be a very cool name for a show horse making his way in the world! Mama carries GBED so 50/50 for this colt also and he will be tested.

Will be priced at one month of age (US)

Foal is eligible for the Iowa Quarter Horse Association Ranch Horse Futurity.

2026 PRICING INCLUDES: Halter/lead rope, negative coggins, health, brand inspection, initial and booster vaccinations of EWT-Flu-Rhino, 1 bag of his current feed, AQHA transfer fee paid and halter training. This is a $300+ value included in the price. Repeat and multiple horse buyers will be less.  If you are not already an AQHA member, you may get your own membership, or we will assess you an additional $65 one-year membership fee to do the $40 transfer for your new purchase.
