Born 5-14-25. Some years we do a fun theme for names. This year we have chosen movie themes for our different stallions. Top Gun Whiskey foals will be named after the Top Gun Call Signs from the original 1986 movie. Next year we will do similar call signs from the 2022 movie. Our other stallions will have Lord Of The Rings and Hobbit themed names. This filly has a pedigree name as sometimes we give a pedigree name instead of a theme name. She will be called Raspberry.
‘Raspberry’ is a red roan filly with both rear legs having splashes of white and sorrel spots in the white. Her dam, Peponita Roan Bar JW aka Strawberry, is a very dark chestnut roan mare that looks almost the color of a chocolate tootsie roll but when she was born she was as sorrel and roan as could be hence the name Strawberry as in strawberry roan. Then she shed a sort of blue color so we thought Blueberry? Then she got sort of dark and purple so we thought Raspberry? Anyway she never has been the color of a strawberry roan but the name just stuck. So, we continue this inside joke with her current filly we are going to call Raspberry. Maybe she will become the color of a raspberry. Strawberry is 92% foundation bred and registered with NFQHA. We raised her out of our mare, Fancy Roan Belle aka Roany who is a cornerstone mare for our program with several of her offspring and grand offspring retained by us. Her sire was Mr Salty Peponita. Strawberry has a very sweet personality and a feminine look to her. She has an awesome hip and is bred with a load of cow and an old fashioned foundation pedigree and she was fun to ride. Her Roan Bar/Peponita bloodlines only speak for themselves. She had a 2014 blue roan filly, Raz Ber Rita Reed JW, 2016 bay roan filly Riveria Reed JW, both by JK Jay Reed; 2017 Whiskey Up Bonita JW by Whoop Up Whiskey and 2018 Miss Two ID Peponita by Two ID Sweet Buck from Tien Quarter Horses who was a keeper for us and gave us her first foal in 2023. Her 2019 foal, Paddys Gin Jafar JW, by TRR Paddys Texas Gin, is a big stout red roan that went with a repeat buyer. Her 2020 foal Top Gun Arlington JW by Top Gun Whiskey and was a mini me of his sire and went to a repeat buyer. She had a 2021 filly, Manzanita Drift JW, by Walter O Rielly aka Radar, who is now sold to a family in Idaho with a very strong appreciating for Walter O Rielly daughters. Her 2022 foal, Top Gun Stingray JW, also by Top Gun, went to Canada. Her 2023 foal, London Blue Drift JW, has been retained for us. Her 2024 filly was also by Radar, Callisto Drift JW, went with a repeat buyer. Strawberry out produces herself no matter who she is bred to.
Raspberry’s sire is Goldun Topsail aka “Topper” who is a 90% NFQHA (F0039287) dun stallion. This is his 5th foal crop. We acquired Topper as part of a package deal with his dam, Whizzin Lena. As a grandson of Topsail Whiz and a son of Jaz Poco Goldun Blue we could not be happier. His dam, Whizzin Lena aka Whiz is an older mare we purchased from Ryan Fleetwod at Fleetwood Farms. Bred at Bob Loomis Quarter Horses in Oklahoma, Whiz is a very well-bred reining mare. Sired by Topsail Whiz, the 1st and only NRHA 12 million dollar sire, and out of a mare by Justa Doc Olena by Doc O Lena, this mare was third in the South Country Derby Non-Pro division in 2001 and won the Non-Pro Reining Futurity at the Canadian Supreme in Red Deer, Alberta. Whiz’s earnings include NRHA $3,754. She also has four performing foals. Her sire Topsail Whiz is in the Hall of Fame, a NRHA money earner, NRHA #1 all time leading sire, AQHA World Show Qualifier, AQHA Leading Sire and ROM Performance. Topper’s sire is Jaz Poco Goldun Blue who is the most photographed or well-known grulla horse. He is 95% foundation and 27% Poco Bueno. With all the titles to his name, and to his progeny, there is no doubt that this is a horse who truly has it all - conformation, disposition, trainability, talent - all wrapped up in that great grulla color!“ as stated by previous owner Ryan Smith of Fleetwood Farms about Jaz Poco Goldun Blue. He was sold to Blue Valley Quarter Horses in NE and is now deceased. Blue was a NRHA money earner and earner of AQHA Open Performance Register Of Merritt. He had 22 pts in Junior & Senior Reining. He also competed in a few AQHA Working Cow Horse shows. His progeny has reported earnings of $10,724 as of 11/1/2024 in barrels, reining and reined cow horse. He also produced foals who have earned AQHA pts in a multitude of events from reining, cutting, VRH ranch riding, barrels, heading heeling and tie down roping, barrel racing, hunt seat equitation, hunter under saddle, pole bending, halter. This is a great testament to how versatile his offspring are. Topper started very well under saddle as a two-year-old. We were looking to add a higher foundation stallion to our herd since our other stallions were getting up in age. We are excited about Topper’s strong reining pedigree as well. He is bred to be a reining horse. His dam and sire are very proven in the reining world and he has several half siblings on both sides that are money earners in reining, reined cowhorse, cutting or barrels that are reported. We decided to not show Topper, but let him ride the "coat tails" of his dam, sire and siblings' achievements.
Raspberry is 91% NFQHA eligible. If you are drawn to old foundation breeding, this filly has got it! This is the first time we have paired this sire and dam together. We are always curious and excited to see how first time experiments grow out. Topper’s foals are quite the lookers and so far, are showing signs of being very trainable and agreeable. Strawberry is one of our best producers. Raspberry should make a nice project for anyone, but for now she is a keeper for us. Talk to us if interested in her though.
