Born 5-27-23. Some years we do a fun theme for names. This year we decided to go with Geology and things that come from the ground.  Many of these names are a little loose in thoughts regarding if they are elements, minerals, rocks, gemstones or colors etc.  Onyx primarily refers to the parallel banded variety of chalcedony, a silicate mineral. Agate and onyx are both varieties of layered chalcedony that differ only in the form of the bands: agate has curved bands and onyx has parallel bands. The colors of its bands range from black to almost every color.

“Onyx” is a brown filly. She has a star, strip, big snip, left front partial coronet on the front, inside and rear heel. Her dam is Sapa Hula Drift JW. Hula has excellent conformation, and we are pleased with her as our first Walter O Rielly daughter that we retained.  She is a Smoky Black and as a broodmare in our program she can produce buckskins, palominos or perhaps other smoky blacks.  She was started under saddle and showed us that she is trainable.  She is friendly and catchable about anywhere. Hula’s sire, Walter O Rielly, is 90.234% NFQHA bred perlino stallion that goes to King P-234 ten times, to Driftwood four times with strong doses of Joe Reed, Three Bars and a little Doc Bar. This is our very first mare we have kept for ourselves from him to cross back on our Paddys Irish Whiskey stallions. We are extremely excited to see what Hula continues to do for our program. Hula is out of a past mare, Little Sapa. Take a good look at the speed pedigree on Hula’s bottom side. According to Circle Dot Horses, Mia Cash Too was a gentle, AAA Stakes Place Winner with a nice disposition who ran the 3rd fastest qualifying time in the All-American Derby. Mia Cash Too sired foals that went on to be racehorses, barrel horses, arena horses and also had plenty of cow.  Little Sapa leaves Dash For Cash on Hula’s papers and also give her Three Bars and Jet Deck through both Easy Jet and Jet Smooth. Her first foal in 2017, Paddys Gin Rafiki JW went to be in KY. Her 2019 foal, Paddys Gin Sahara JW  headed to Illinois.  Her 2020 foal, Paddys Gin Odessa JW, was also by Tex and is now in OK. We switched gears in 2021 and she had her first foal by Top Gun Whiskey, Top Gun Spruce JW, that is now MS. Hula was open in 2022 making Onyx her 5th foal.

Top Gun Whiskey is one of four Paddys Irish Whiskey sons that we have owned. This is his 5th foal crop. We decided to give Top Gun a shot at the show ring before breeding him. In 2016 he qualified for the AQHA World Show in Jr Reining, Jr Reining Level 2 and Jr Cowhorse Level 2; in 2017 he qualified for the AQHA World Show in Jr Cowhorse, Jr Cowhorse Level 2 and Open Heading Level 2 placing 6th.  It has been an interesting ride as he continued to show during the 2018 year as well as breed some of our mares for 2019 foals. Top Gun qualified for the 2018 World NRCHA show, was 2018 North Central Regional NRCHA Champion and has earned 47 AQHA performance points in reining, working cow horse, heading, vrh cutting, vrh confirmation, vrh reining and heeling. He also has his AQHA Open Performance ROM. Top Gun was injured during 2019 breeding season that cut his showing career short, but he still qualified for NRCHA Celebration of Champions in LTD Open Bridle. He was North Central Region NRCHA 4th place LTD Open Bridle and North Central Region NRCHA 9th place Open Bridle. Check out his stallion page for the most up to date information as we will change it as it happens.

Onyx will have all the right moves and ‘cowiness’ to make an excellent performance, ranch, or rope horse. She will be a dynamo package with a good disposition. We may keep this one but let us know if you are interested in her.
